Ivanisevic Scrapes by In Croatia

ZAGREB, Croatia -- Defending champion Goran Ivanisevic dropped a set Wednesday before overcoming unseeded Swede Magnus Norman in an unexpectedly difficult first round tie at the Croatian indoor men's tournament. Top seed Ivanisevic took two hours and 20 minutes to beat Norman 7-6, 6-7, 7-5.

"I've played very badly. It was only my serve that kept me alive," Ivanisevic said.

The only seeded player to drop out in the first round so far is No. 8 Hendrik Dreekmann of Germany, who lost 7-6, 6-2 to Romania's Alex Raduciou.

In Tokyo, defending champion Iva Majoli of Croatia earned a clash with world number one Steffi Graf by beating Japan's top player, Ai Sugiyama, 7-5, 7-5, in the Pan Pacific women's open Thursday.

In other matches, Amanda Coetzer of South Africa overlasted seventh-seeded Romanian Irina Spirlea 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 and will play second seed Martina Hingis of Switzerland on Friday.

Third-seeded Spaniard Conchita Martinez edged past Kristie Boogert of the Netherlands 7-6, (7-5), 1-6, 6-3.
