Israel Asks Syria To Halt Hezbollah

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Syria to stop Hezbollah attacks on Israeli forces in Lebanon after a roadside bomb killed three soldiers Thursday. Iranian-backed Hezbollah guerrillas claimed responsibility.

The violence erupted during an apparent flurry of diplomatic contacts to restart Israel-Syria peace talks.

The White House said Wednesday it was preparing to host the leaders of Israel, the Palestinians, Egypt and Jordan in separate meetings with President Bill Clinton over the next two months.

Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy said Thursday he was sure the sides could find a formula to restart the talks halted by Israel's previous government after a wave of Islamist attacks 11 months ago. "I have no doubt that we can reach a formula that will bridge the stances," he said.

Syria's demands that Israel resume talks on the basis of withdrawal from the Golan Heights conflicts with Netanyahu's position.
