Emigration Waning?

MOSCOW () -- Russia's desire to emigrate appears to be waning, a poll released Thursday said.

According to the Public Opinion Fund, only 6 percent of the 1,500 people polled nationwide said they wanted to emigrate to another country. In 1992, the same pollsters found that 11 percent wanted to leave.

Russians are also less enthusiastic about a temporary sojourn abroad to earn money, the Public Opinion Fund reported. It said 11 percent of the respondents wanted to do this, as compared to 17 percent in 1992.

The Public Opinion Fund offered no explanation for why emigration, or even working briefly abroad, was losing its appeal for Russians.
