Diphtheria Hits School

MOSCOW () -- Thirty-four schoolchildren have been hospitalized in Moscow for diphtheria and one of them is seriously ill, in the biggest outbreak of the disease to hit the Russian capital in recent years, a newspaper reported Thursday.

The popular daily Moskovsky Komsomolets said a 12-year-old boy had contracted the potentially fatal disease during the New Year's holidays, and infected 33 other children at school No. 903 in southern Moscow.

All those infected were hospitalized, but only the 12-year-old's condition was serious since the others had been vaccinated against diphtheria, the paper reported, quoting doctors.
