Dalglish To Manage Newcastle

NEWCASTLE, England -- Kenny Dalglish was named Tuesday as Kevin Keegan's successor as manager of Newcastle.

The club had called a news conference Tuesday evening to make an official announcement. But the appointment of the former Liverpool and Blackburn manager was confirmed by an official of Glasgow Rangers, the Scottish club where Dalglish has been working as a scout.

"We are sorry to see him go, but naturally wish him every success at Newcastle," Rangers vice chairman Donald Findlay told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Newcastle's ClubCall phone line also confirmed that Dalglish, 45. was taking over.

Former England coach Bobby Robson may have had second thoughts about turning down an offer to take over at Newcastle after seeing his Barcelona side throw away a 2-0 lead and lose, 3-2, to struggling Hercules.

Barcelona's defeat by a team which had not gained a single Spanish first division away point this season shocked the Nou Camp stadium fans, who ended the game screaming abuseat Robson.

One of the biggest league upsets in recent years is certain to bring calls to replace Robson.

The result is a gift to leaders Real Madrid, who now outpace Barcelona by three points despite drawing their weekend game at Extremadura. (AP, AFP, Reuters)
