Russian Chess Win

YEREVAN, Armenia () -- The Russian team, playing without its leaders Garry Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik, cruised Monday to a 3.5-0.5 victory over Finland in the first round of the World Chess Olympiad.

The 14 rounds of play began with the strongest national teams playing the lowest-rated teams, so many teams played without their best players to save them for more important games.

The American team playing against low-rated Paraguay unexpectedly lost a game when its leader, former U.S. champion Boris Gulko, was upset by low-ranked Valiene Cristobal.
