Official Resigns, Calls for Coalition

Kharon Amirkahnov, one of the deputy prime ministers in Chechnya's Moscow-backed government, announced his resignation Sunday, calling for a new coalition government to include separatist rebels.

Amirkahnov, chairman of Chechnya's Independent Agrarian Party, said he was resigning for the sake of peace in Chechnya and proposed forming an interim administration to lead Chechnya out of its deep economic crisis, Interfax reported.

The new coalition government would include the separatists, the current government and Chechnya's other parties and movements, he said.

According to Interfax, Amirkahnov told a press conference that several other government members were likely to resign, too. However, he did not name them.
