Norilsk Plans Job Cuts

The Norilsk Nickel metals group plans to slash jobs not related to production, Interfax quoted Norilsk director Alexander Khloponin as saying Wednesday.

He did not say how many jobs would be cut but said 80 percent of Norilsk workers had jobs not related to output.

Khloponin, installed this spring by investor Uneximbank, also told workers in the Arctic town of Norilsk that units not directly related to production would be given greater freedom within the firm.

Interfax said wage arrears at the main metals combine totaled 800 billion rubles ($149 million) and salaries had not been paid for two months.
