Korea to Get Weapons

SEOUL () -- South Korea, a traditional consumer of U.S. arms, will equip a new army unit with Russian weapons, Defense Ministry officials said Tuesday.

The new unit, scheduled to be launched on the nation's Oct. 1 Armed Forces Day, will be emblematic of improved ties between South Korea and its former Cold War enemy, officials said.

The ministry's announcement came a day after a Russian military delegation began a four-day visit to South Korea to promote military exchanges.

Officials described the new unit as a "battalion-level field outfit'' equipped with 30 Russian BMP-3 combat armored vehicles and other weapons. They did not disclose other details.
