Investors Upbeat On North Korea

RAJIN, North Korea -- North Korea won expressions of guarded optimism from foreign experts Monday after luring investment agreements worth more than $800 million from the Stalinist state's first wary flirtation with the capitalist world.

Participants leaving the Rajin-Sonbong free trade zone after an investment forum that ended Sunday said the meeting was only a good first step for reviving the impoverished communist land.

North Korean officials were delighted.

"At the forum we planned to have investment contracts and agreements worth $300 million, but concluded contracts and agreements worth $840 million," said Kim Jong-u, chairman of the Committee for the Promotion of External Economic Cooperation.
