Grain Imports to Rise

ST PETERSBURG () -- Russia on Tuesday revised upward the amount of maize and soymeal it plans to buy this year from the West to 4 million to 4.5 million tons and said downpours in Siberia could affect the grain harvest.

Agriculture Minister Viktor Khlystun told an industry meeting in Russia's second city that Moscow would buy maize and soymeal from the United States, Canada and Australia this year.

"We intend to import 4 [million] to 4.5 million tons of maize and soymeal, not only in 1996 but probably also in the coming years," he said.
