Fires Rage in North

MOSCOW () -- Some 900 firefighters are battling forest fires in northern Russia sparked by an unusually late heat wave, a news report said Tuesday.

In the Novgorod region just south of St. Petersburg, 92 fires are raging through forest and peat bogs, Itar-Tass said.

About 900 emergency workers are fighting the blazes, but they say their efforts are hampered by aging equipment and a lack of money for supplies.

Daytime temperatures have averaged 25 degrees Celsius in the region for the past two weeks, the warmest weather for this time of year since 1972, the report said.

This year has seen an usually high number of forest fires in Russia, fanned by unusually hot, dry weather.
