Composer Dies

ST. PETERSBURG () -- Veniamin Basner, who composed classical music, musicals and movie scores, has died at age 72, Itar-Tass reported.

The report said he died Monday in St. Petersburg but did not give the cause of death.

Basner graduated from the conservatory St. Petersburg, but soon shifted to composing. He wrote the music for nearly 50 films, the report said.

He was a longtime friend of Dmitry Shostakovich, whom he considered his principal influence. Among his last works was the "Symphony in Five Movements,'' based on excerpts from Shostakovich's opera "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District.''

It was given its world premiere last year in New York.

No information on funeral arrangements or survivors was immediately available.
