China to Claim Title of 'Tallest'

BEIJING -- China plans to have the world's tallest building by 1998.

A 450-meter, 100-story building in Chongqing in southwestern China will claim the record, now held by the 445-meter Petronas Towers office complex in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

But the Chongqing complex will have a short turn holding the world record. Work is to start soon on what is planned to be an even taller building -- 140 stories -- in the southern city of Guangzhou, Xinhua said. It did not give the exact height.
