Bulgaria Denies Report

MOSCOW () -- The Bulgarian Embassy has issued a statement denying a recent newspaper report that the Soviet Union deployed nuclear missiles in that Balkan country.

"There have never been any nuclear missiles on our country's territory and there are none now,'' the statement said Friday.

The Moscow daily Komsomolskaya Pravda wrote earlier last week that the Soviet Union maintained an ultra-secret nuclear missile base in Bulgaria in the late 1980s with about 70 nuclear warheads aimed at Greece and Turkey.

It said former Soviet Defense Minister Dmitry Yazov confirmed the information, leaked by a retired military captain.

The Bulgarian Embassy's statement said its official had denied the information when a Komsomolskaya Pravda correspondent called before the report was published.
