Zhirinovsky Visits Iraq

BAGHDAD () -- Russian ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky arrived in Baghdad on Monday and condemned the trade embargo imposed on Iraq by the United Nations as "a savage crime," the official Iraqi News Agency INA said.

Zhirinovsky, quoted by INA, said his visit was "to discuss steps which would end the embargo imposed on Iraq for the last six years."

Iraq has been under UN trade sanctions since its 1990 invasion of Kuwait. The curbs include a ban on oil exports and imports of goods apart from humanitarian needs.

"The embargo is a savage crime being inflicted against the Iraqi people through pressure from the United States which is trying to deviate the United Nations from its human goals in order to be an instrument to serve its vicious schemes," Zhirinovsky said.
