Water for Holiday

ZAPORIZHZHYA, Ukraine () -- Residents of Zaporizhzhya have more reason than most to celebrate Ukrainian independence day Saturday: Local officials have decided to turn the hot water on in honor of the holiday.

The Zaporizska region of southern Ukraine -- home to some 2.2 million people -- has been without hot water for over a month because local thermal plants haven't paid their bills.

Regional leaders voted Thursday to turn on the taps every weekend from 2 p.m. Friday through midnight Sunday to mark the fifth anniversary of Ukraine's declaration of independence from the Soviet Union, a spokeswoman for the Energy Ministry said.
