Walesa AppealsFor Chechnya

WARSAW -- Former Polish president Lech Walesa appealed to fellow Nobel prize winners Thursday to help end the war in Chechnya, saying the conflict was not just an internal Russian affair, PAP news agency reported.

"There are moments when internal matters become the concern of all humanity," Walesa said in a letter to Nobel laureates read at the opening in Warsaw of a conference on the conflict in the southern Russian region.

"Such a moment is a war against a nation, against a minority, the use of rockets, artillery and airforce, resorting to the crime of genocide," PAP quoted the letter as saying. "There should be no place for governments which conduct such policies among the civilized family of nations."

The conference, organized by Chechen separatist representatives in Poland, aims to publicize the war and seek a solution.
