Viva Europa

MOSCOW () -- Adding a new level of bluster to its relations with Washington, the European Union has unexpectedly proclaimed itself the winner of the recently completed Atlanta Games.

According to an item in The Guardian newspaper, EU officials in Brussels have released a report stating Europe's 229 medals dwarfed both the United States' total of 101 medals and Russia's modest 63, only 25 of which turned out to be gold.

And although Australia's 2.28 medal winners for every million people bettered the EU's mark of 0.62, the Europeans did much better than the Russians' 0.43 and the Americans' paltry 0.38, the report said.

The most productive Europeans were the Germans, who collected 65 medals, and the least productive was Luxembourg -- no medal.

The British chipped in with 15.
