Vesco Speaks in Court

HAVANA () -- Robert Lee Vesco, the reclusive financier who has eluded U.S. justice for 25 years, made a reluctant appearance in a Havana courtroom Thursday to defend himself against charges of economic crimes against Cuba.

Looking gaunt in his jailhouse shirt and trousers, Vesco told a five-member tribunal that he committed no crimes while trying to develop a new drug to treat cancer and arthritis.

He said the Cuban Health Ministry had authorized studies of a drug, known as TX, for possible use on this communist island nation. He said he never tried to market the drug without the government's knowledge.
