U.S. Soccer Olympians

n ATHENS, Georgia () -- A record crowd of more than 75,000 fans roared the United States on as they beat China 2-1 to win the first women's Olympic soccer title.

Midfielder Shannon MacMillan put the Americans ahead in the 18th minute when she hammered home from close range off a deflection.

China's Wen Sun pulled one back in the 32nd minute with a chip over advancing U.S. keeper Briana Scurry. Defender Brandi Chastain just failed to clear the ball off the line.

The winning goal came in the 68th minute from 23-year-old forward Tiffeny Mibrett, whose first international cap was against China five years ago.

Earlier, barely 24 hours after soccer-mad Brazil saw its men's team fail to reach the Olympic final after losing 4-3 to Nigeria, the Brazilian women's side went down 2-0 to Norway in the bronze-medal match.
