Union Threatens Strike

MOSCOW () -- Russian coal miners will stage a nationwide strike Aug. 26 to press their demands for the payment of overdue wages, a union leader said Wednesday.

Vitaly Budko, head of the nation's largest independent coal miners' union, told Interfax that a strike was the only way to get the government's attention.

A number of mines have been hit by wildcat strikes since the July 3 presidential election, putting a dent in Russia's coal production. The state-run coal company Rosugol said earlier this month that July production was short almost 2 million metric tons.
