Tavildara Battles Abate

ALMATY, Kazakhstan () -- Fighting between Islamist rebels and Tajik government forces over the strategic town of Tavildara has died down, a Tajik defense ministry spokesman said Monday.

The spokesman said there had been some small-arms fire overnight but that the town was now "quiet."

The rebels said Sunday they had taken Tavildara in heavy fighting last week. The Tajik government confirmed there was fighting but has not said who controls the town.

But Gerd Merrem, the United Nations special representative to Tajikistan, said the government had told him Sunday it had lost control of Tavildara.
