Tajik Attacks Repulsed

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan () -- Russian border guards in Tajikistan repulsed about two dozen Tajik opposition fighters trying to cross into their Central Asian country from Afghanistan, a news report said Friday.

The border guards opened fire Thursday to prevent the rebels from crossing the Pyandzh River into Tajikistan, Interfax reported.

In the restive Tavildara regions, clashes between rebels and Tajik government troops continued through the night, Defense Ministry spokesman Zarubiddin Sirodzhev told Interfax on Friday. Government troops suffered no casualties, he said.

President Emomali Rakhmonov's personal representative in the region, Makhmud Idiyev, was gunned down Thursday by two unknown masked assailants, government officials said.

The Tavildara area, 200 kilometers east of Dushanbe is partly controlled by the opposition and has been a focal point of the fighting

for months.
