Satellite Contact Lost

MOSCOW () -- Scientists attempted Friday to re-establish contact with a Czech research satellite that failed soon after it was launched from northern Russia, Itar-Tass reported.

The Magion-5 was launched Thursday aboard a Molniya-M booster from the northern Plesetsk Cosmodrome, along with an Argentinean Microsat satellite and a Russian Interball-2.

Signals from Magion-5, which is designed to study the impact of solar wind on Earth's magnetic field, became very weak soon after it separated from the other satellites, the report said.

Specialists from the Czech Institute of Physics of the Atmosphere determined that one of the satellite's solar batteries had not opened.
