Protesters Attacked

TULKAREM, West Bank () -- Yasser Arafat's security forces opened fire Friday on Palestinian protesters trying to storm a West Bank jail, killing one and wounding several others, an official said.

Palestinian police clamped a curfew on the town of 40,000 and called in reinforcements from neighboring Palestinian-ruled towns to contain the rioting.

The clashes came a day after protests against Arafat's Palestinian Authority in the neighboring town of Nablus that were sparked by death of a detainee who had been severely beaten by Palestinian security forces.

Friday's violence erupted after relatives of suspects jailed for membership in the Islamic militant organization Hamas protested outside the Tulkarem jail to press for their release.
