Priebke Fights Move

ROME () -- Former SS captain Erich Priebke, who was ordered freed after a war crimes trial in Italy, told an Italian judge Tuesday he would fight German moves for his extradition, his lawyer said.

A Rome military court ruled last Thursday that Priebke, 83, was guilty of involvement in a 1944 SS massacre of 335 Italians but said he should serve no prison time because a 30-year statute of limitation for the crime had expired.

The verdict caused outrage and Italy re-arrested him eight hours later when Germany indicated it sought his extradition.
