Peacekeepers Stay On

MOSCOW () -- Georgia and its breakaway province Abkhazia agreed to extend the mandate of Russian peacekeepers on their border, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman has announced.

The agreement came earlier this month during Russian-brokered talks in Moscow, said spokesman Mikhail Demurin.

The 1,500-strong contingent, ostensibly a Commonwealth of Independent States force, was deployed in the region after Abkhazian separatists drove Georgian government forces out of the lush seaside province in the fall of 1993 following 13 months of bitter fighting.
