Naval Exercises Cut

MOSCOW () -- Heavy rains swamping the Russian Far East have flooded an open-pit coal mine and cut short Russian-U.S. naval exercises, news reports have said.

The pumps at the Luchegorsk mine in the Primorye region couldn't keep up with the torrents of water coming from overflowing rivers, Pyotr Khaspekov, the coal company director, told Itar-Tass.

Troubles may deepen when Typhoon Kirk, moving toward Russia across the Sea of Japan, brings a new surge of torrential rains. The typhoon is expected to hit the region Thursday.
