Minsk Residents Slam McDonald's

MINSK, Belarus -- Residents of a district in Minsk protested Friday against the construction of a McDonald's restaurant saying it would attract only filth and unwanted wealthy post-Soviet consumers.

"We are very concerned by chaos brought on us by the authorities at the instigation of excessively rich people," said a statement signed by 225 residents of Bangalore district.

"After the opening of McDonald's the sanitation situation will become impossible. We will be inundated by rats, cockroaches and other vermin."

Construction of the restaurant, the first of three to be built in Minsk this year, started several months ago. The fast food chain plans nine restaurants in the former Soviet republic between Russia and Poland.

"The opening of McDonald's is very important for Belarus," Igor Butomo, of the Foreign Economic Relations Ministry, said. "We will see no foreign investment here until we create a proper infrastructure of good highways, hotels and restaurants."
