Military Cool-Down

PARIS () -- France and Germany will seek to bury the hatchet after a war of words over French armed forces cuts when their defense ministers meet for a relaxed lunch and informal private meeting Sunday, officials said.

France's Charles Millon has invited Volker Ruehe, Bonn's strongest critic of plans to pull most French troops out of Germany, to his constituency of Belley, east of Lyon.

French defense ministry sources described the talks as a friendly working meeting.

"Both sides are tired of the disagreements and there is a strong will to start things afresh from a basis of mutual trust. They want reconciliation," said one German official.
