Littlewoods To Open In Moscow

ST. PETERSBURG -- The British-based Littlewoods department store is planning to open its first store in Moscow next year, a company official said Friday.

Jeremy Grant, Littlewoods' trading general director, said the location of the planned $2 million, 1,000-square-meter store has not yet been determined. He said he planned to visit Moscow on Tuesday to discuss the project.

"We are well aware about differentials in Moscow in store rentals, which is very high compared to St. Petersburg," he said. "So we will have to choose very carefully and decide whether to go for a very high-price city center site or to continue a police we have here for looking possibly" in the suburbs.

Littlewoods has four stores in St. Petersburg, including one in the downtown Gostiny Dvor center. Grant said Littlewoods will not initially own the Moscow store outright, but instead have it run as a franchise operation.

"Once we find the site, we would wish to open it in the first quarter, by the end of March next year," he said.

On Friday, Littlewoods opened its refurbished store on Leninsky Prospect in St. Petersburg, bringing the company's total selling space in the city to 3,300 square meters.
