Kristall Wins PepsiCo Suit

The Moscow-based Kristall distillery won a case against PepsiCo Inc. in a U.S. court in Seattle, Washington, Kristall director Vladimir Yamnikov told Interfax on Wednesday.

He said that PepsiCo, which sells "ultra-premium class" Stolichnaya-Kristall vodka through distributors in the United States, had altered the Stolichnaya-Kristall brand label without consulting Kristall. He claimed that Pepsi then began selling under the Kristall trademark vodka produced by other Russian distilleries.

Yamnikov said the district court judge ruled that PepsiCo had infringed upon Kristall's trademark rights and declared illegal the use of the Stolichnaya-Kristall trademark for vodka of other distilleries sold in the United States.

Interfax did not make clear why Kristall chose a Seattle court for its legal challenge.
