Irvin Cop Cops Plea

DALLAS () -- A former policeman pleaded guilty Friday in a plot to murder football star Michael Irvin and was sentenced to six years in prison.

Johnnie Hernandez, 28, is to report to prison Monday, the day he was to go on trial.

In a deal with prosecutors, he pleaded guilty to solicitation of murder and an unrelated bribery charge. State Judge Jack Hampton approved the plea bargain and sentenced Hernandez to a pair of concurrent six-year prison terms, one for each charge, and two $1,000 fines.

He could have received up to 99 years on the murder solicitation charge. With good behavior, he could be paroled after serving two years of the six-year term, officials said.

Prosecutors said Hernandez paid an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration agent posing as a hitman $2,960 on a contract to kill the Dallas Cowboys' star receiver.
