Irate Peddler Kills Judge in Court Attack

A peddler whose goods were confiscated stabbed to death a Moscow municipal judge Friday, the day after she ordered his goods confiscated and fined him the equivalent of $7.

Judge Olga Lavrentyeva bled to death at Sklifosovsky Hospital after being stabbed at the court building Friday morning, Itar-Tass said.

Itar-Tass identified her attacker as Valery Invankov, a peddler who had appeared before the judge Thursday on a minor administrative charge. The judge ordered his goods confiscated and fined him 39,000 rubles, the report said.

Russian television said Lavrentyeva's colleagues said judges were generally unprotected against criminal attacks and were calling for better security for judicial personnel.

Lavrentyeva, the mother of a 3-year-old daughter, presided in the Ostankino municipal court in Moscow.

Her attacker was identified as Valery Ivankov. He was arrested at the scene and charged with murder.

According to Itar-Tass, Ivankov did not have a history of any mental illness on record at Moscow's Psychiatric Clinic.
