Herb Rages in China

HONG KONG () -- Typhoon Herb ripped into southeastern China on Friday, killing one person and pounding the coast as it weakened, while Taiwan reeled in its wake with 19 dead, 41 missing and millions of dollars in damage.

People's Liberation Army soldiers and volunteers locked arms to form a human wall to hold back the cresting waters of Boyang Lake in China's central Jiangxi province as the tropical storm swept inland, local officials said.

The typhoon had weakened into a severe storm packing maximum winds of 88 kilometers per hour by late Friday as it drove inland but was expected to dissipate by late Saturday, officials said.
