German Union Deal

BONN () -- German store bosses made a breakthrough regional pay deal Tuesday after months of talks with shop unions, paying no extra cash for new late shifts and keeping the headline rise down to a moderate 1.85 percent.

The agreement, reached after four months of deadlock and mounting strikes by shop workers, covers 125,000 workers in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, but will set the pace for pay deals for Germany's 3 million shop employees.
