Fielder, Vaughn Move

NEW YORK () -- Baseball's American League sluggers Cecil Fielder and Greg Vaughn were on the move right before the major league trading deadline.

Fielder took his $9 million salary and home run swing to the bright lights of New York on Wednesday, as the front-running Yankees shipped outfielder Ruben Sierra and minor-league pitching prospect Matt Drews to the lowly Detroit Tigers.

"It's a big right-handed bat in the lineup," New York manager Joe Torre said of Fielder. "This really bolsters our lineup and makes a left fielder of Darryl Strawberry. Cecil will DH and spell Tino [Martinez] at first base on occasion."

Vaughn left Milwaukee, taking his big bat west to the San Diego Padres along with a player to be named later for pitchers Bryce Florie and Ron Villone and outfielder Marc Newfield.
