Don't Get Trapped Downtown

Several days ago I was trapped downtown -- the first time this has happened to me since 1993. Be careful or it could happen to you, too.

If you drive downtown on Ulitsa Kachalova, hoping to turn to the right to the Boulevard Ring or driving straight ahead to the Kremlin through Malaya Nikitskaya Ulitsa (former Kachalova) -- forget about it. The road is closed there a hundred meters before the intersection with Ploshchad Nikitskikh Vorot, and when you first arrive it looks like you are trapped.

The only way out is to head toward the Boulevard Ring by turning left on to Ulitsa Spiridonovka (former Alekseya Tolstogo) and to drive down it in the opposite direction -- back to the Garden Ring. Be alert: The street divides and you have stay on the right side. You should drive straight ahead to the first intersection and then turn to the right to Spiridonyevsky Pereulok and then drive straight, passing the Marco Polo Hotel.

At the first crossroad, turn right to Malaya Bronnaya Ulitsa and drive straight ahead to the intersection with the Boulevard Ring.

Once you get there, you will see a one-way street which you can follow toward Ulitsa Novy Arbat. If you want to turn into Bolshaya Nikitskaya Ulitsa (former Gertsena,) or get to Tverskaya Ulitsa, you should turn around in front of the entrance to the tunnel under Novy Arbat. Make sure to stay in the left lane while driving across the Boulevard Ring. --
