Difficult Salvage

EAST MORICHES, New York () -- Navy salvage ships recovered more wreckage from TWA Flight 800 as investigators began the complex job of untangling the 1-ton lump of steel and wires that was once the cockpit.

The examination of the demolished cockpit, discovered over the weekend, could advance a probe that so far has found no evidence to explain why the jetliner exploded over the Atlantic shortly after takeoff July 17, killing all 230 people aboard.

Teams of investigators from the FBI, the National Transportation Safety Board, TWA and Boeing were evaluating how to dismantle the wreckage, which also includes a mass of electronics below the cockpit.
