Court Clears Nazi

ROME () -- A military court absolved former Nazi SS Captain Erich Priebke on Thursday of the most serious charges in the World War II massacre of 335 Italian civilians.

The court found him guilty of taking part in the reprisal killings -- which Priebke admitted -- but cleared him of acting with cruelty and premeditation because he was only following orders, as the defense argued.

It was not immediately clear whether Priebke would go free because the prosecution has said it would appeal an acquittal, as is possible under Italian law.
