Belarus Slams U.S.

MINSK, Belarus () -- Belarus on Tuesday blasted the United States for granting political asylum to two of the former Soviet republic's most prominent opposition figures.

Belarus "cannot regard as a friendly act'' the decision to give asylum to two leaders of the Belarussian Popular Front, said deputy foreign ministry spokesman Valery Tsepkalo in an interview with Interfax.

He claimed Zenon Poznyak, the head of the Popular Front, and Sergei Naumchik, the press secretary, had gone to the United States "in pursuit of their personal interests, above all economic.''
