Activists Ring Church

PARIS () -- Hundreds of human rights activists spent a third successive night surrounding a Paris church to try to prevent police from expelling 300 African immigrants, 10 of them on a 46-day-old hunger strike.

Ignoring mounting calls for talks, Interior Minister Jean-Louis Debre has rejected the Africans' demands for residence permits and offered only to discuss conditions for sending them home.

The hunger strikers, most of them Malians, have vowed to fast to the end. The protesters' spokesman Abubakar Diop says they have rejected an offer from the Malian consulate of money if they return home.
