Ukraine Miners Strike

KIEV -- More than 100,000 coal miners in eastern Ukraine went on strike Wednesday to demand wages that have not been paid for months, a union official said.

"They struck today to get the 105 trillion karbovanets [$595 million] that they are owed," Yury Berdnyk, chief of Ukraine's second-largest coal miners' trade union, said in Kiev.

He said 36 of 251 mines in eastern Ukraine's aging Donbass coal pits were striking.

It was difficult to determine the exact number of miners involved, but it was over 100,000.

A coal industry ministry spokesman said only 30 pits had struck, and that wage debts amounted to 90 trillion karbovanets.
