Trophy Art Bill Rejected

MOSCOW () -- The upper house of parliament on Wednesday rejected a bill that declares art treasures looted by the Soviets in World War II are now the property of Russia.

Interfax said some members of the Federation Council feared the measure would aggravate Russia's quarrels over the treasures with countries that were looted, including Germany.

It said others felt the bill, passed earlier this month by the Duma, or lower house, didn't lay a firm enough claim to the thousands of priceless paintings, sculptures, drawings, manuscripts and other valuables the Red Army scooped up at the end of the war.
