Tamil Rebels Attack

COLOMBO () -- Separatist Tamil Tiger rebels overran a key army camp in northeastern Sri Lanka on Thursday and claim to have killed more than 150 government troops in the attack, military officials said.

Rebel radio traffic monitored by army signals intelligence experts said more than 150 soldiers were killed in the massed assault on the Mullaitivu base, 280 kilometers northeast of Colombo, a senior army officer said.

The Defense Ministry said in a statement that the more than 1,000 troops manning the base had repulsed the raid with the help of air and naval support.

A large force of rebels, fighting a 13-year war for independence in the island's north and east, stormed the base from the south and by sea early Thursday, military officials and diplomats said.
