Tajik Truce Violated

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan () -- Islamic rebels shelled government positions near the border with Afghanistan on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning in violation of a cease-fire signed last week, Tajikistan's Security Ministry said.

The ministry said the rebels used heavy guns to shell government positions near the village of Kalai-Husein in the Tavildara region, Itar-Tass reported. The region is at the foot of the Pamir Mountains about 200 kilometers east of Dushanbe.

There was no immediate report of casualties.
