Russia, Europe Rocket Firms Ink Soyuz Deal

PARIS -- European and Russian rocket firms have signed a deal to market Russian Soyuz rockets for launching small satellites, the West European partners said Thursday.

The new venture, to be called Starsem with headquarters near Paris, includes rocket consortium Arianespace, France's state-owned Aerospatiale and Russia's space agency RKA and the Samara Space Center.

"The new company will be in charge of industrial and commercial operations for Soyuz launch systems for customers around the world," Arianespace and Aerospatiale said.

"In particular, Soyuz systems will be offered for missions to place small satellites and constellations of satellites into low or medium orbits," they said. They gave no financial details.
