Power Crisis Worsens

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East () -- The energy crisis in the huge Primorsky region of Russia's Far East peaked Wednesday when the main power plant was shut down, officials said.

The region's deputy governor. Valentin Dubinin, said the remaining smaller plants had fuel oil to last for only two days, after which Primorsky will be facing a nearly complete blackout.

The power crisis already has affected most of the area's industrial and residential customers. The last operating furnace at the main Primorsky power plant was shut down Wednesday, Dubinin told Interfax.
