nIreland Tensions Rise

BELFAST () -- Tension mounted in Northern Ireland on Friday ahead of a flashpoint march that has fired passions among pro-British Protestants and pro-Irish Catholics.

The guerrilla Irish Republican Army branded Protestant parades through Catholic areas a provocation.

Police delayed for 24 hours a decision whether to reroute the march at Portadown, south of Belfast, where a similar fixture last year led to a three-day showdown involving police and outbreaks of ugly rioting.

Two thousand police are expected to be drafted into Portadown on Saturday to try to prevent trouble surrounding Sunday's annual march by the Protestant Orange order honoring 17th century victories over a Catholic king.
